Lopunny - Pokémon
The Inspiration
I got my inspiration for Lopunny from 3 different inputs. The first was that I absolutely love Pokémon and have been looking to cosplay one for a while. The second was that, for some time now, I wanted to make a cosplay that's more 'anime-girl' oriented just for the sake of adding it to my resumé and trying out that style. The third and most decisive one came to me through Instagram where someone had made a Playboy-bunny version of Lopunny. Even tough I like bunnysuits very much I was looking and it and thought to myself, this is such an easy approach to making a bunny-like Pokémon, why not make it a bit more exciting and extravagant? And just like that I started to get inspiration for an anime-girl version of Lopunny and on the list she went!
The Making Of The Costume
After I had decided to make an anime-girl Lopunny (or gijinka), I took some bold decisions on the style of it. Given Lopunny's design I wanted to make a sexy outfit that was still family friendly to take to a convention and not super cheesy with a bunnysuit or bikini.
Googling burlesque outfits turned out to be a masterly move because I got so much inspiration! Burlesque clothing is actually designed to make you feel pretty, sexy and empowered without necessarily being naked or showing off a lot of skin in special areas. Lots of burlesque dancers wear long dresses or skirts, shorts, corsets and more to hide their body and they take off piece by piece in their act to reveal multiple layers underneath. Their outfits often tell a story or resemble a certain character and are actually a fantastic piece of work with a lot of thought in the design and modelling of it.
So for my Lopunny I decided to use burlesque clothing as a guideline. I very quickly decided on shorts instead of a skirt because I feel more comfy in them, of course a corset was a must and I have a weakness for overknee socks so they went on the list too. As much as I was looking forward to sewing all of it, I decided to order the clothing online because I was in the middle of moving houses and didn't have access to all my cosplay materials and sewing stuff. I couldn't find everything in brown tones so that meant dyeing fabrics, which I was actually looking forward to because I never did it!
