Clothing

Apart from costumes, I also like to make regular clothing from time to time. It's different because there is not an entire character attached to it, so it gives me a lot of freedom while working. Sometimes I find fabric that screams to be turned into a lovely piece of clothing, sometimes I have inspiration to make something and get started. It's also a great way to explore patterns and sewing techniques which I can then apply to my costumes!

I won't write elaborate sewing details about each piece, just a few words to do justice to the project!

Market apron

When my mum and I go to the artist markets to sell our handmade dolls (yes, I'll give you the link to our website: Poppen en Knuffels) we like to dress according to our craft. That, for me, meant wearing my Mad Hatter costume but without the hat. As much as I love my Hatter, after two markets I noticed that people got very distracted by the costume, especially the sash of bobbins, which gave me a bit of an uncomfortable feeling because I was there as an artist and not a cosplayer. I decided to make something else to wear, and my choice fell on the pattern in one of my mum's sewing magazines for an apron: easy to wear, fits over anything and everything and it has pocketsesss precious! Cute starry scrap fabric, red binding, leftover red fabric from Suki's waistband and a few evenings of sewing later and my new vendor's outfit was done!

Palmleaf jumpsuit

I made this jumpsuit by combining two patterns. For the top I used a pattern from one of my mum's sewing magazines, for the bottom I used a pattern for flare pants that I had laying around. The fabric was, as usual, a scrap from my local shop and the feel of it is fantastic. It's very light and a bit stretchy, it feels super luxurious. The bow at the neck opens so you can take it off easily and adjust the neckline how you like. I wore this jumpsuit to a few occasions now and I can't help but feel majestic in it!

Firefly corset

My last corset (for now) followed a few weeks after the other two. I was really in a flow and so surprised that I managed to make these corsets and that they actually looked good thanks to the amazing pattern (Clarisse corset by JoannaPatterns)! I noticed too late that I didn't have enough eyelets but I think that one less, with bigger ribbon crosses on the back, is really not that bad for this corset. The firefly corset is my favourite, period. I don't think I'll be able to top this one, but who knows. I still have scraps left!

Rose corset

The rose corset followed two days after the temple corset and is made with the same pattern (Clarisse corset by JoannaPatterns). I got matching binding and ribbons (wider this time, I wanted bigger bows on the shoulders) and took off immediately. Unbelievably enough I love this one even more than the temple corset!

Temple corset

Another pattern that I found on Instagram (Clarisse corset by JoannaPatterns). I have a weakness for corsets and when I found this very easy to follow pattern I got and got down to fabric hunting! That actually took only 5 minutes, because I have a huge stash of fabric at home including scraps from my grandparents' interior design shop (they made everything fabric in the house like curtains, carpets, upholstery, bathmats...). My eye fell on several scraps and I decided to start with this one. I got matching binding and ribbon, raided my car's emergency kit for long zip ties to use as boning and got to work. The end result is 1000x better than I had dared to hope and I love it to bits!

Scarf bomber jacket

The inspiration for this jacket came from an Instagram video where a girl turned a used Hermès scarf into a bomber jacket. I don't have anything fancy like a Hermès scarf, but I do have a local thrift shop with tons of scarves! I found a great pattern online, got blue fabric, white padded lining and white border fabric for the collar and sleeves and got to work. It took me a full week and a lot of cursing, especially since I had never made a jacket and fumbled a lot with the explanations in the pattern, but I managed and I'm super proud of the result. I have many more scarves so maybe I'll make some more later on!
